The Crofthouse Museum is a mid-nineteenth century Shetland croft which was lived in until the late 60s. A typical family unit included Grandparents, parents and children. The sea, not the land, was the main provider and the crofter was a fisherman, seaman or whaler. Read more Founded in 2003 the Cunningsburgh History Group is very active in the community. Current projects include acquiring a new premises for activities and restoration of an old lifeboat Read more George Waterson, the former Scottish Director of the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds, had a massive influence on Fair Isle. He bought the island and co-founded the Bird Observatory in 1948, giving the isle's economy a much needed boost. Read more The Centre includes weaving machinery, local items and an interpretation of the Hoswick Whale case. The Café provides delicious home bakes and light lunches all made to order as well as space to display items collected and preserved. Read more The Mill was originally built in 1867. Its primary purpose was to handle the estate grain. The Mill has been restored to its former glory and is operated by the South Mainland History Group. Read more Located at the Hoswick Visitor Centre, this history group works alongside the Sandwick, Social and Economic Development Company. Meetings are held usually on the last Thursday of each month except July & August. Read more The Interpretative Centre has on display the former “flit-boat” used to transport livestock and materials to the Isle of Mousa.
