Overview

Herring Days The Unst Boat Haven was the inspiration of one man and it has become a ‘mecca’ for wooden boat enthusiasts from all over the world. The Boat Haven is the attractive home for a fine collection of over 20 old wooden boats, most of which were used for fishing. There is also a great range of fishing gear, documents, charts and photos, which tell the story of Unst’s maritime past. This includes the ‘boom’ herring years when Baltasound’s population swelled every summer to about 16 thousand and it was known as one of Europe’s top herring ports. If you want to delve a little deeper, there is a comfortable study room. Even if you have never set foot in a boat, you will not be disappointed by your visit.
