The award winning Shetland Museum and Archives, situated in the historic Hay’s Dock is your starting point to Shetland’s unique heritage. You can discover the Shetland story through the Museum, Archives, children and adult learning events, auditorium and relax in Hay’s Dock Café and Restaurant.
The Museum is an unmissable package in discovering Shetland’s story. The unique layout of the two main galleries takes visitors thorough a maze of Shetland’s archaeology and history, displaying over 3000 pieces, climaxing in a dynamic three-storey Boat Hall. Hands on learning make the visit fun for all ages. Regular films are shown in the Auditorium, which is also used for lectures. Art, craft and artefacts can be viewed in Da Gadderie’s regular Exhibitions.
The Archives large collection ranges from the 1500’s to the present day, covering every aspect of Shetland’s story through papers, maps, plans, newspapers, journals, oral history, books, music, records and a fantastic collection of photographs. The research room is comfortable and accommodates up to 20 people.
The day can be completed enjoying Shetland influenced foods, using the best local ingredients at Hay’s Dock Café Restaurant, which is situated with panoramic views of the Lerwick Harbour.
